Greetings, space adventurers of ESOP-Direkt: Prepare for a stellar welcome!
Captivated, the two space travelers inquired if they could join us, having overheard our conversation and eager to share their mission, which correlated with the experiences we were discussing. They introduced themselves as Kolja Czudnochowski and Dr. Christopher Hahn, the founders of ESOP-Direkt, which aims to facilitate fair, and legally secure, employee participation in start-ups as well as in small and medium-sized enterprises. “What exactly does employee participation entail?” someone in the group asked, astonished. Kolja explained that employees receive company shares through a program called ESOP (Employee Stock Option Plan), granting them ownership in the company through capital stock. These shares are not only distributed upon the sale of the company, but employees also receive an increasing percentage based on their tenure with the company. Another form of employee participation is through VSOPs (Virtual Stock Option Plans), where employees receive virtual shares, providing the same benefits, with less regulatory complexity. Regardless of the option chosen, remaining a part of the spaceship and continuing the mission proves to be worthwhile for employees!
Win-win situation: Why everyone benefits from an ESOP
“Employee ownership is a thrilling win-win situation for companies and employees,” Kolja declared. Employee ownership leads to satisfaction and motivation, acting as a performance-based supplement to fixed salaries. The more successful the company and its employees become, the greater the rewards. Employees find it easier to connect with the values and goals of the company, granting them a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment. Christopher added to Kolja’s remarks, highlighting the numerous benefits for companies as well, “Employees become committed to the company and are less likely to leave, particularly in the case of young or small enterprises. They are motivated to embark on the company’s mission, and in turn, companies don’t have to offer exorbitant salaries upfront. Instead, they provide additional compensation when the company achieves success.” The group, previously downtrodden, now appeared captivated and motivated, ready to embrace this idea for their own spaceships. I was elated by this initiative and the reactions of the space travelers. As fate would have it, Kolja and Christopher confided in me that they were seeking a PR boost for their mission—and what can I say… We, the Laika Space Dogs, wouldn’t be true to our name if we couldn’t offer the proper communication support for precisely these kinds of projects!

Since May 2023, Laika and ESOP-Direkt have embarked on the shared journey with the goal of garnering media attention and visibility to establish ESOP-Direkt as a leading initiative for ESOPs and VSOPs, while educating the media and companies about employee ownership, and positioning them as key players in this field. To achieve this, we will provide ESOP-Direkt with comprehensive support in PR strategy, corporate communications, media relations, content development, and securing speaking engagements. Right from our encounter at the space bar, it became evident that Laika and ESOP-Direkt were a perfect match, and the initial launch has shown great promise.
