Black Friday PR: What 20 Years of Tech Journalism Taught Me

Laika –

Every November, the same dance: embargoed launches pile up, inboxes flood, and editors triage hundreds of near-identical Black Friday pitches. After +20 years as a tech journalist and editor here’s what I’d tell any consumer tech brand about Black Friday PR, minus the fluff…

1. You’re not pitching a brand. You’re pitching a product — make it effortless.

When I built gift guides, the winners were never the loudest pitches. They were the ones that gave me everything in one place: product, price, the actual deal, launch date, high-res images, and a working buy link. A gift guide is a deadline product; the brand that saves the editor ten minutes wins the slot.

2. A discount is a fact. A story is a reason to care.

“20% off” doesn’t make a headline. What does? A genuinely lowest-ever price you can defend in public. A bundle that answers a real problem. A considered purchase explained well — shoppers do their big, researched tech buys in Black Week now, and journalists know it. Give them context they can quote, not just a strike-through price.

3. Timing isn’t a detail. It’s the game.

Long-lead gift guides close months before anyone thinks about shopping. Short-lead digital wants you in October. And in Black Week itself, the “best deals still available” roundups refresh daily — when your stock sells out or your price changes, the brands whose PR answers within the hour keep their placement. The ones that answer the next day read like everyone else’s yesterday’s news.

4. Trust is the story now

Ten years of fake strike-through prices made shoppers (and journalists) suspicious. Editors increasingly call out misleading discounts. If your genuine discount history is worth showing — show it. In a week full of noise, being the brand with nothing to hide is a differentiation.

The honest summary: Black Friday isn’t won on the day itself. It’s won weeks earlier — with effortless product pitches, a price you can defend, and a story that makes the discount worth writing about.
