Type, type, type, search! Imagine making a positive impact for the planet with every web search you perform. Sounds great, right? Yes, indeed. With the sustainable search engine Ecosia, this is exactly what happens. Since sustainability is a major focus for Laika, we are thrilled to contribute to a greener planet with our new client, Ecosia. But what exactly does Ecosia do?

A greener planet with every search

In 2009, Christian Kroll founded Ecosia, a search engine that plants trees. Headquartered in Berlin, Ecosia is the world's largest non-profit search engine. The tech company allocates 100% of its profits to climate protection and has planted over 200 million trees in collaboration with local communities in more than 35 countries. Similar to other search engines, Ecosia displays ads alongside search results. When users click on these ads, Ecosia earns money, which is then invested in tree-planting initiatives worldwide. In addition, Ecosia constructed its own solar plants in 2018, doubling its renewable energy capacity. Every search made on Ecosia contributes to combating climate change by capturing CO2 from the air.

Sustainable purchasing decisions with assistance

Since 2019, Ecosia has been highlighting companies dedicated to a sustainable planet by tagging their websites with a green leaf during searches. Ecosia is the world's first search engine to aid users in making environmentally friendly decisions by providing additional information directly upon searching, allowing users to make decisions more quickly. Alongside the green leaf mark, companies may also receive a coal symbol, given that coal is a major cause of climate change and many companies still support its expansion.

More trees for a weather-resilient Berlin

Despite their search engine, Ecosia also stands up for local climate issues. Increased temperatures and extreme weather are becoming more frequent. Ecosia’s home base Berlin is not adequately prepared for these challenges, lacking green spaces that can mitigate temperatures, improve air quality, and provide shade. Therefore, Ecosia launched the "BaumEntscheid" campaign on the 13th of September 2023. By Easter 2024, Ecosia aims to draft a Tree Law, Germany's first concrete climate adaptation law, in collaboration with associations, political parties, and the scientific community. Through the Tree Decision, Ecosia has the goal to make Berlin weather-resistant and heat-secure by 2035, establish legal obligations, and empower the Senate and district administrations to implement necessary measures.

It’s Laikas turn: Ecosia's comprehensive Refining in DACH Media

Ecosia aims to refine their position in DACH media in collaboration with us. The primary goal is to transcend the conventional role as a search engine, with a focus on systematically building credibility and solidifying an exemplary role within the media landscape. The partnership with us is intended to position Ecosia as a trailblazer in the technology and environmental sectors. This includes targeted placements in the media to effectively showcase Ecosia's innovative features and climate initiatives. We are very excited to start this journey with Ecosia:
